Can political asylum claims in Morocco block an extradition request?

Morocco recognises refugee status under the 1951 Convention, and pending asylum applications can complicate extradition proceedings. If the Bureau des Réfugiés et Apatrides grants refugee status based on persecution risk in the requesting state, extradition to that country becomes legally problematic. However, asylum claims do not automatically suspend extradition — courts assess each independently. Timing is critical: filing asylum applications after arrest may appear tactical and receive less favourable treatment. Documentary evidence of persecution, human rights reports, and country condition analyses substantially strengthen both asylum and anti-extradition arguments.
