Can Mexican nationality protect me from extradition to a foreign country?

Article 14 of Mexico’s Ley de Extradición Internacional permits but does not require Mexico to refuse extraditing its own nationals. Unlike some civil law jurisdictions with absolute prohibitions, Mexico exercises discretion case-by-case. When extradition of a Mexican national is refused, the principle of aut dedere aut judicare may apply—Mexico can prosecute the individual domestically for the alleged foreign offense. Acquiring Mexican citizenship after the alleged offense occurred provides weaker protection, as courts examine nationality status at the time of the conduct and the extradition request.
